Raphanus raphanistrum

The scientific name for the genus that includes radishes is Raphanus, Greek for “quickly appearing.” This makes it ideal for a child’s garden, because they germinate rapidly.

Description

Typically small, round and red. These radish are often used in salads and have a strong, almost horseradish like spice, adding a nice bite to any dish.


Storage tips

Store in refrigerator with humidity. Immediately remove greens from right above the root. Use those greens in and greens stew, cook soon. Radish roots will store fro 3-5 days in your fridge.


Culinary tips
  • Slice thin on a mandoline for eating raw in a salad or pickling.
  • Serve with butter or créme fraîche to cut the spice.
  • Radish tops are great for braising.
