Recovering from the Winter Storm

February 24th, 2021

We’re happy to be back in the groove this week as we begin to recover from the winter storm damage. Though we did lose many crops in the field and in the high tunnel, there are many that pulled through with minor frost damage. Here’s what survived: carrots, beets, lettuces, baby bok choy, spinach, arugula, and peas. We think our garlic, onions, and celery have a pretty good chance of pulling through as well but we’ll be monitoring them closely over the next couple of weeks to make sure.

As expected, we lost most of our tomatoes in both the high tunnel and the field. Tomatoes are incredibly frost sensitive and prefer overnight temperatures that are consistently above 45 degrees. Thankfully, we had some tomato survivors in the greenhouse so we’ve been able to transplant a couple of rows this week to keep us on track. We transplanted a mix of Sungold, Juliet, Candyland, and BHN tomatoes this week. We also plan on seeding more tomatoes in the greenhouse to make up for our losses.

The carrots that weathered the winter storm are a variety called “Sugarsnax”. As the name implies, they have a sweet flavor and are the perfect carrot for snacking. As you can see in the photos, these carrots are long and slender unlike larger storage carrot varieties. These carrots are best for raw applications but they can also be steamed, roasted, or sautéed. We’ll have our Sugarsnax carrots available at the farm stand on Saturday so make sure to stop by and pick some up!
