Sunflower Bounty at Sunset Farm

Since late Spring we have been harvesting beautiful blooms from our successions of sunflower cover crop, and now the final flush is beginning to blossom! This successful sunflower patch has conditioned the soil by sending down long tap roots into the compact layers of our native clay soil. In addition to strong taproots, sunflowers produce a significant amount of biomass that decomposes and is incorporated back into the soil once the crop is terminated. Unlike most cover crops that do not produce a harvestable return, these sunflowers have become a staple in the beautiful bouquets found in the Grab-n-Go cooler every day!

If you have been enjoying baby greens from Sunset Farm, we have more harvests in store for you! Our next round of arugula has sprouted and we are patiently waiting for the baby kale to germinate! Different from crops like broccoli and cabbage with one-time harvests, baby greens are unique in their ability to regrow after being cut to enable multiple harvests within one lifespan.

Mark your calendars for a free Farm Tour next Saturday, October 24th, from 10am – 11am! Experience the beauty of Fall on the farm first-hand and taste the flavors of cool-season veggies.
