Happy New Year! As we gear up for another year on the farm, we wanted to take a moment to share some of our favorite highlights from 2024. We hope they were as memorable for you as they were for us!

We hosted several free Farm Tours throughout the year. We loved the opportunity to interact with our community and share our love and knowledge of farming!

We successfully launched our first Fall Community Vegetable Share! Over the course of the six-week share we were able to offer 25 different produce items. We received great feedback from our share members and are looking forward to offering another share this spring with more variety and offerings.

We had a productive fall including a great succession of fall tomatoes! Our cherry tomatoes and slicers are still going strong and have excellent flavor.

A productive fall meant we could offer tons of delicious variety at the Farm Stand. Your top 5 favorites were tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, scallions, and salad mix. The Farm Stand is open every Saturday from 9am - Noon and the Grab-and-Go cooler is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Please come on by and enjoy these delicious, sustainable and super fresh veggies!

We relaunched our Volunteer Program and were able to tackle several projects with the help of our hardworking volunteers. Our volunteer program takes place every Saturday from 8:30-11am and is a great way to help keep Sunset Farm a thriving part of the Jordan Ranch community. We hope the members of our Community Vegetable Share Program have been enjoying their farm-fresh veggies over the past couple of weeks! If you’re a Jordan Ranch resident and missed out on the initial sign up, we still have a couple of spots available. Shares are delivered directly to your door every Tuesday afternoon from now through Tuesday, December 17th. That means there’s still a month’s worth of shares left if you sign up before the end of this week! Our share members not only get the perk of home delivery, but first dibs on limited harvests like our upcoming delicata squashes. To learn more and sign up for your own share, head here. 

Scallions are back in season at the Farm Stand! Often called green onions, scallions are a great way to add a mellow onion flavor to a multitude of dishes. They can be used raw as a garnish or cooked. The white and light green portions tend to have a stronger flavor and stand up better during the cooking process while the darker green tops have a delicate flavor perfect for garnishing. Try pairing scallions with cheddar cheese in a batch of biscuits or cornbread. Or, use them as a garnish for soups and salads. 

Have you had a chance to try our baby broccoli yet? The baby broccoli we have at the Farm Stand is actually a variety of sprouting broccoli. It differs from standard one-cut varieties as it produces several smaller crowns with thinner stalks rather than one large primary crown. We love to char grill or roast baby broccoli with olive oil, lemon, chili, and garlic. It makes a simple yet incredibly flavorful side dish that we can’t get enough of lately!

This week we delivered the first round of shares for our Community Vegetable Share Program! We still have a few spots available so if you’re a Jordan Ranch resident you can sign up for the remaining 5 weeks’ worth of shares here. Shares are delivered every Tuesday from now through Tuesday, December 17th. Each share includes 5-7 produce items hand chosen and delivered directly to your home on Tuesday afternoons by farmers Matt and Anne. If you struggle to find time to make it by the Farm Stand, this is a great alternative since we bring your produce directly to you! Fall tomatoes have arrived at the Farm Stand! Since tomatoes store best outside the chill of the fridge, you’ll find them on the table next to the iPad. We have two cherry varieties (Cherry Bomb and Sungold) in addition to one slicing variety (Early Girl). These tomatoes have great flavor and we’ve been enjoying snagging some to snack on while we harvest. The cherry tomatoes are perfect for salads while the slicers make a great addition to sandwiches and burgers.

While the produce in our self-serve coolers is available 24/7, every Saturday our farmers set up on the porch for a more traditional Farm Stand. The tables are lined with a beautiful assortment of produce from the farm and our farmers are present to help with your purchases and answer any questions you might have, including recipe suggestions! This in-person Farm Stand takes place every Saturday from 9am-noon. Can’t make it? You are always welcome to pop by the coolers whenever it’s convenient for you. Simply choose what you need and pay with a credit card on the iPad.

Our Community Vegetable Share Program is returning for the fall season! The program is exclusively for Jordan Ranch residents and runs for 6 weeks, beginning Tuesday, November 12th through Tuesday, December 17th. The investment for the season is $126 which breaks down to just $21 per week. Each week, participants will receive 5 - 7 produce items hand chosen and delivered directly to your home by your farmers, Matt and Anne. All of our produce is grown utilizing organic and sustainable practices and will be harvested on Tuesday mornings to ensure you receive fresh, healthy, and beautiful vegetables! 

Curious what a typical vegetable share would look like this week? Now that we’re beginning to harvest an abundance of fall veggies, a share this week would consist of a colorful mix of beets, cherry tomatoes, rainbow Swiss chard, French breakfast radishes, kale, and Napa cabbage.

In future weeks, you can look forward to carrots, cabbage, arugula, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and more.

Each week, we'll include a special recipe and below are a few quick recommendations:

• Pickle the radishes and make a quick salsa with the cherry tomatoes to enjoy with your favorite tacos
• Roast the beets and blend them into a hummus to snack on throughout the week
• Wilt the Swiss chard and kale into a batch of minestrone soup 
• Shred the Napa cabbage and toss it with a spicy Sriracha dressing for a slaw that can be enjoyed alongside sliders or grilled fish

We are launching a special 6-Week Veggie Share that will allow Jordan Ranch residents to receive the farm's vegetables, herbs, and flowers delivered fresh to their homes.  The season starts Tuesday, May 7 and runs through June 18th. Each week you will receive between 5 - 7 items, including a selection of tomatoes, squash, peppers, scallions, kale, beets, artichokes, flowers and more. The cost is $126 ($21/week) and includes free home delivery.  Space is limited so make sure to follow this link to sign up! If you want to see the rainbow of flowers currently blooming on the farm, we invite you to join us for our next Farm Tour on Saturday, May 11th at 10:30am! In addition to the striking sunflowers you see above, we have zinnias, cosmos, and snapdragons growing. At the end of the tour, you’ll be able to purchase a cut flower bouquet from the Farm Stand so you can enjoy a bit of farm beauty at home. Or, you can give the bouquet to a loved one in celebration of Mother’s Day. Our Farm Tours are open to the public and are suitable for all ages. We would love to see you there! 

Our peppers are beginning to flower and set fruit! As you can see in the photo below, it won’t be too long until they make their way to the Farm Stand. These peppers are planted in the high tunnel which offers these moisture-sensitive plants some added protection from the elements. This first wave of peppers will be mostly made up of sweet and mild varieties like Escamillo, Lunch Box, and Shishitos. Our hot peppers are a few weeks behind so you can expect to see them towards the end of this month.

In case you missed the announcement last week, we will be offering a 6-week Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm Share Program this spring exclusively for Jordan Ranch residents! Each share will be harvested and delivered to your doorstep every Tuesday and will contain 5-7 items. An example share for this week can be seen above. If you’re interested and would like to hear more about this program, we invite you to join us this Friday, April 19th, from 4-6pm on the farm porch for our Spring CSA Farm Share Happy Hour. This event is for current Jordan Ranch residents only. Make sure to secure your spot here so we have plenty of refreshments available! 

Yellow Squashes are in season at the Farm Stand! This summer squash variety (below) has a nutty and mildly sweet taste. Just like zucchini, yellow squash can be used in a multitude of recipes, both sweet and savory. We recommend trying them topped with breadcrumbs and herbs in this simple side dish. To satisfy your sweet tooth, try grated yellow squash in this lemon squash bundt cake. 

We are excited to report that tomatoes will be making their way into season very soon! Last week we noticed the first blush of color on our cherry varieties in the high tunnel. Once this happens, it’s only a matter of time before we’re able to start harvesting. Since we have tomatoes planted in both the tunnel and the field, our hope is to lengthen our tomato season as long as possible this year. You can expect to see cherry varieties at the Farm Stand in the next week or two and slicing varieties within the next few weeks.

This program is a great way to support the farm while experiencing our unique seasonal shifts through farm-fresh produce delivered directly to your home. If you’re interested and would like to hear more about our inaugural CSA Farm Share Program, we invite you to join us on Friday, April 19th from 4-6pm on the farm porch for our Spring CSA Farm Share Happy Hour! If you’re curious what is making its way into season over the next month, we would love to show you during our next Farm Tour this Saturday, April 13th, at 10:30am. You’ll have the opportunity to see our blushing cherry tomatoes in the high tunnel, our blooming flowers in the field, and a new weed control method we’re trying. Plus, you’ll get to sample some refreshing cucumbers! Our tours are open to the public and all ages are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!

One of our favorite farm snacks is back in season: cucumbers! We’re harvesting slicing cucumbers that are perfect for enjoying raw. Farmer Reuben loves to keep it simple and pair sliced cucumbers with tajín for a quick snack. They’re also great in salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and juices. This year, we’re focusing solely on slicing varieties due to their reliability in past seasons. We have successions planted in both the high tunnel and the field in order to keep us in steady supply for the next several weeks.
