We’re gearing up for our first Farm Tour of the fall season and can’t wait to see you! The tour takes place this Saturday, October 4th, from 11am-12pm. You’ll get an exclusive look at what it takes to get the farm ready for the fall season in addition to all of the delicious veggies we’ve been planting. Our tours are open to the public and suitable for all ages. No fee or signups required – simply show up at 11am on the farm porch ready to go!

The arrival of October brings the first harvest of our Cherry Belle radishes! These beautiful, vibrant radishes are crisp and crunchy with a peppery bite. They can be enjoyed raw in salads, sandwiches, and tacos and are a great candidate for quick-pickles. If you want to mellow their peppery flavor, try roasting them alone or with a mix of other root veggies. Make sure to stop by the Grab-and-Go coolers to snag a bunch or two this weekend!

Block out the morning of October 18th on your calendar and join us for our Orchard Beautification Day! This volunteer opportunity takes place on Saturday, October 18th from 9am-12pm right here on the farm. With your help, we’ll be weeding and mulching the trees in the orchard. We’ll also be planting a couple of rows of thornless blackberries and a native pollinator bed at the entrance. This event is open to the public and is a great way to leave your mark on the community. We hope to see you there!

We are excited to share that our first monthly Farm Tour of the fall season is on Saturday, October 4th at 11am! This tour will be a great opportunity to meet our Farm Team and celebrate the start of the fall season on the farm. Attendees will get an exclusive sneak peek at all of the fall varietals that will soon be making their way to the Farm Stand and onto your plates within the next couple of months. And, you might even get a taste of some of the first fall produce! Our tours are free of charge and open to the public. We hope to see you there!

We did a lot of direct seeding in the high tunnel this week for fall! Since most varieties we planted can be sown thickly (i.e. fairly close together), we’re able to do this with the help of our push seeder. This farm tool allows us to plant several rows within minutes! Among the varieties planted were arugula and carrots. Since arugula is a quick grower and can reach the baby phase in a matter of weeks, you can expect to see the first arugula at the Farm Stand within the next month!

We planted a yellow mustard cover crop in a few beds on the southeastern portion of the farm to help suppress the growth of one of our most abundant and pesky weeds: nutsedge. Yellow mustard is a quick growing cover crop that will not only address the weed issues in these beds but can suppress harmful soil-borne nematodes and fungi. It is a different variety of mustard than the ones we grow and harvest for their spicy leaves. This cover crop will eventually produce yellow flowers that will attract and provide a food source for our native pollinators.

Our first Farm Tour of the fall season is this Saturday, October 12th, at 10:30am! This tour will be an exciting one as it coincides with the first harvest of our fall crops. You’ll have the opportunity to see (and taste!) the new crops we’re harvesting and get a sneak peek at all of the delicious varieties that will be making their way to the Farm Stand this season. And, you’ll get the opportunity to see how our fall tomatoes are doing! Our Farm Tours are open to the public, free of charge, and suitable for the whole family. We would love to see you there!

We’ll have a few new veggies for you at the Farm Stand this weekend! Whether you choose our grab-and-go option or come see us on Saturday morning, you’ll be able to try the first komatsuna, Amara mustard greens, and collard greens of the season. Komatsuna (above), sometimes called “Asian spinach” has a fresh and mildly sweet cabbage flavor with tender leaves and crunchy stems. It’s great for sautéing, stir-frying, and adding to soups. Amara mustard greens (below), sometimes called Ethiopian kale or Highland kale, have tender leaves with a rich, savory flavor. Try mixing them with your favorite salads green or making a simple sauté seasoned with garlic, salt, and pepper.

No planting is complete without a lovely layer of compost! Compost is an essential part of our bed preparation process throughout every season. Before planting new crops, we apply a thin layer of compost to the top of each bed (below). The biology-rich matter in compost recharges the life in the soil and gives our crops a good start. The compost we applied this week will carry us through winter, keeping the soil healthy and active.

We are delighted to share that our first Farm Tour of the fall season will be on Saturday, October 12th at 10:30am! This educational stroll will include a preview of all of our fall crops in both the field and the high tunnel. You’ll also have the opportunity to check in on the progress of our fall tomatoes and ask us when your favorite veggies will be making their way back into season. Our Farm Tours are open to the public and free of charge. We would love to see you there!

Remember all of the varieties we direct-seeded in the high tunnel last week? As you can see below, some of them are already germinating! Most of what we planted will grow fairly quickly and will be ready for harvesting in the next few weeks. You can expect to see French breakfast radishes and arugula make their way into season first followed by salad mix and Hakurei turnips. Though we seeded carrots here as well, they have a slower germination rate and longer growing period. We’ll have a better idea of our carrot timeline once they begin to germinate.

We’ve reached the point in the year when our summer crops are starting to slow down and will eventually be phased out. You might have noticed that cucumbers are now out of season and we only have limited amounts of zucchini this week. We encourage you to enjoy the remaining summer crops as much as possible before they make their way out of season over the next few weeks! If you’re curious how to prepare any of the produce we’re currently harvesting, you can always ask us during our Saturday Farm Stand from 9am-noon or reach out on Instagram or Facebook.

The summer season has arrived on the farm! In order to combat the heat, we’ve installed shade cloths on both the high tunnel (pictured above) and the greenhouse. Since we use the high tunnel to extend the season of certain crops, the shade cloth will aid in keeping them cooler, less stressed, and more productive. This will allow us to provide you with more heat sensitive crops like tomatoes a bit longer than we would if they were planted in the field without any protection. If you’d like to see our shade cloth and summer crops in person, make sure to join us for our Farm Tour this Saturday, June 15th at 10:30am! This event is suitable for all ages and open to the public.

Two of our favorite summer crops will be making their way into season over the next couple of weeks: long beans and Korean melons. Both of these varieties can take the intense heat of summer and will lend delicious diversity to our future harvests. Our long beans (above) are just beginning to flower. Since the beans grow fairly quickly once the flowers are pollinated, you can expect to see them at the Farm Stand within the next week or two. Our Korean melons (below) are just beginning to set fruit. They will need slightly longer to size up and turn their characteristic bright yellow color. Be on the lookout for them in the next 2-3 weeks!

The back sections of each side of the main production field are currently planted with beneficial cover crops. One side is planted with cowpeas while the other (below) is planted with a mixed species soil builder. Planting cover crops during the summer allows us to improve the health of our soil while intentionally reducing the footprint of the farm. Both of these cover crops will be left to grow throughout the season before being turned under in preparation for fall planting.

We invite you to join us for our next Farm Tour on Saturday, June 15th at 10:30am! This month we’ll be focusing on the transition to the summer season and what that looks like on the farm. You’ll get a sneak peek at our upcoming summer crops along with the newly installed shade cloths on both the high tunnel and greenhouse. As always, attendees will be able to sample seasonal crops like cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. Our Farm Tours are open to the public and suitable for all ages. We hope to see you there!

We harvested a small amount of butternut squashes with more to follow in the coming weeks. This variety is called “Butterbaby” and it yields small, personal sized squashes. As you can see in the photo above, butternuts are a lighter cream color before the skin toughens up and they turn the tan color you see below. After harvesting, our butternuts will undergo the curing process in the greenhouse. This allows the skins to toughen up and the natural sugars to concentrate leading to a longer storage life and a better flavor. You can expect to see these baby butternuts at the Farm Stand in a couple of weeks!

Poblano peppers made their way into season this week! These dark green peppers have a bright, fresh flavor and mild to medium heat. They are great for roasting, stuffing, pickling, and incorporating into sauces. Farmer Reuben’s favorite way to enjoy poblano peppers is in chile relleno. He prefers a stuffing made with ground beef but you can also use cheese or a vegetarian meat alternative depending on your preference. Here’s a recipe if you’d like to make your own version at home this weekend. Make sure to stop by the Farm Stand to stock up on peppers first!

This Saturday at the Farm Stand we’ll have a limited number of beautiful fresh cut flower bouquets for Mother’s Day! These bouquets are lovingly made with flowers grown and harvested here on the farm. Each bouquet will include a colorful mix of zinnias, cosmos, and sunflowers. They’re perfect for gifting and adding a cheery pop of color to your home. Since we will have a limited quantity available, we recommend getting to the Farm Stand early to ensure you get to take one home! The Farm Stand is from 9am-noon on Saturday on the farm porch.

Once you pick up your bouquet and farm-fresh veggies, we invite you to stick around for our Farm Tour! Join us this Saturday (May 11th) at 10:30am for a stroll around the farm to see what’s growing. We’ll explore all of the different tomato varieties we’re harvesting in the high tunnel and the field in addition to our peppers that will be coming into season very soon. And, you’ll have the opportunity to see our gorgeous row of blooming sunflowers! Our Farm Tours are open to the public and suitable for all ages. We hope to see you there!

After much anticipation, we are excited to share that slicing tomatoes have made their way into season! We have two varieties for you to enjoy this year: Galahad and Valencia. Galahad (left) is a red beefsteak-type slicing tomato with juicy flesh and a balanced flavor. Valencia (right) is an orange slicing variety with a sweeter flavor. These varieties are perfect for your next BLT sandwich or caprese salad. Farmer Reuben loves putting a really thick slice on his burger along with lettuce, jalapeno, and chipotle mayo. You can find our slicing tomatoes on the shelves next to the coolers at the Farm Stand.

Our peppers are beginning to flower and set fruit! As you can see in the photo below, it won’t be too long until they make their way to the Farm Stand. These peppers are planted in the high tunnel which offers these moisture-sensitive plants some added protection from the elements. This first wave of peppers will be mostly made up of sweet and mild varieties like Escamillo, Lunch Box, and Shishitos. Our hot peppers are a few weeks behind so you can expect to see them towards the end of this month.

If you’re curious what is making its way into season over the next month, we would love to show you during our next Farm Tour this Saturday, April 13th, at 10:30am. You’ll have the opportunity to see our blushing cherry tomatoes in the high tunnel, our blooming flowers in the field, and a new weed control method we’re trying. Plus, you’ll get to sample some refreshing cucumbers! Our tours are open to the public and all ages are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!

One of our favorite farm snacks is back in season: cucumbers! We’re harvesting slicing cucumbers that are perfect for enjoying raw. Farmer Reuben loves to keep it simple and pair sliced cucumbers with tajín for a quick snack. They’re also great in salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and juices. This year, we’re focusing solely on slicing varieties due to their reliability in past seasons. We have successions planted in both the high tunnel and the field in order to keep us in steady supply for the next several weeks.

We have so many crops about to make their way into season and we would love to share a sneak peek with you at our next Farm Tour! Come join us on Saturday, April 13th at 10:30am for a spring stroll around the farm as we explore the new crops in the high tunnel and the field. You’ll get to see our baby tomatoes and cucumbers in addition to our beautiful blooming flowers. And, you’ll get to sample some first-of-the-season summer squashes including our stunning yellow zucchini. Our tours are open to the public and suitable for all ages. We can’t wait to see you!

We are thrilled to announce that zucchini has made its way into season at the Farm Stand! This first wave of zucchini is a dark green variety called Dunja. It has a nutty and mildly sweet flavor and can be enjoyed both raw and cooked. If you want something refreshing for these warm spring days, we recommend trying a zucchini carpaccio (recipe here). For a simple and flavorful side dish, Farmer Anna recommends cutting zucchini in half lengthwise, grilling it, and pairing it with an herb butter.

Beets have also made their way into season this week! This root veggie has a distinct earthiness that pairs well with citrus, fresh herbs, goat cheese, and nuts. Beets are incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed in sweet recipes (like this beet, apple, and carrot cake) as well as savory ones. Farmer Anna recommends roasting or steaming beets and adding them to a batch of hummus. Or, you could try pickling them and adding them to salads and sandwiches. You can find beets at the Farm Stand beginning this weekend!

We are pleased to report that all of our tomatoes have been planted! We have them split between the field and the high tunnel as we’ve done in years past. While checking our trellis system in the high tunnel this week, we spotted the very first baby tomatoes (below)! Here’s a closer look at the varieties we’ll be growing this year: Sun Gold (super sweet orange cherry tomato), Cherry Bomb (classic red cherry tomato), Valencia (orange slicing tomato), Clementine (sweet-tart orange cocktail tomato), and Galahad (red beefsteak tomato).

Tender and sweet spring onions are back in season at the Farm Stand. Spring onions (below) are an immature bulb onion with a sweet, mellow flavor and tender texture. They’re harvested in the process of thinning our bulb onions which allows space for the remaining bulbs to develop and grow. These onions can be enjoyed raw as a garnish or cooked. We recommend trying them with some of our chard and dill in an omelet or frittata this weekend!

Come celebrate the arrival of spring during our next Farm Tour on Saturday, March 16th at 10:30am! We’ve been busy planting crops for the upcoming season and are so excited to share a preview of what we’ll be growing over the next few months. As always, this tour will include a sampling of veggies that are in season at the Farm Stand like our peppery arugula. Our tours are open to the public and free of charge. We look forward to seeing you there!

Can you believe it’s already time to plant tomatoes?! Now that we’re past our last frost date for the season, it’s time to get them in the ground. As you can see in the photo below, our tomatoes are verdant, lush, and ready to be planted! We’ll be growing a mix of cherry and slicing varieties and will be splitting them between the high tunnel and the field. Here are the varieties you can expect to see this spring: Sun Gold, Cherry Bomb, Valencia, Clementine, and Galahad.

Though our first succession of cucumbers, zucchinis, and summer squashes just went in the ground, they will start trickling into season before you know it. All of these warm season favorites are in the cucurbit family and are quick growers, especially when the soil is warm! Since they grow fairly quickly, we typically plant multiple successions throughout the season in order to ensure a steady supply. You can expect to see the first zucchini, summer squashes, and cucumbers arrive at the Farm Stand in about a month.
