A deep love for stewarding the earth and quietly growing alongside nature serendipitously sparked on Valentines Day this year when Khanh volunteered for the first time at Sunset Farm. Each week she continues to volunteer her time on Saturday, typically weeding in the field or interacting with community members at the Farm Stand. Khanh has grown to appreciate the dynamic process of farming by seeing first hand just how much changes week to week, especially when adapting to environmental elements. Being connected to local agriculture has allowed Khanh to slow down and savor the food she enjoys, now understanding the effort it took to grow.

This Saturday from 9am - 12pm, we will be selling Mother's Day Bouquets at the Farm Stand with fresh cut flowers from the farm! The zinnias just started blooming and will give a beautiful pop of color to each flower arrangement! A few new veggies have also ripened this week including radishes, poblano peppers, and green bell peppers. Carrots, kohlrabi, and fennel have been a kitchen staple for the past several months, but now are out of season and will not be available at the Farm Stand.

Mark your calendars for the Community Blackberry Planting Day next Saturday, May 16th, from 9:30am - 11:30am! Last year volunteers planted one row of blackberries, which are now leafing out and producing fruits! This year we plan to complete the blackberry orchard by planting two more full rows. Join us at Sunset Farm to harvest fresh veggies, plant new Spring crops, and cultivate healthy soil through our volunteer program! We love to share the beauty and bounty of the farm with novice and seasoned gardeners alike, and no farming experience is necessary to be part of the Sunset Farm family. As the Spring season gains more momentum, our volunteers have the opportunity to follow crops from seed to harvest and experience our organically-based growing practices firsthand.

If you have a particular interest in learning more about fruit or flower production, Sunset Farm’s orchard and flower patch are beautiful spaces to grow your green thumb! Our pomegranate trees are now loaded with vibrant flowers and small fruits, which will be quickly followed by figs and jujubes! When caring for pomegranates, patience is key as the fruits take around five months to develop from pollination to full maturity!

This week we have a tasty selection of fresh leafy greens, root veggies, and a limited variety of new Spring crops like summer squash! This Saturday you can also find herb seedlings for your home garden including rosemary, sage, and chives!

After planting our field tomatoes this week, we have officially wrapped up tomato planting for the season and are now looking ahead to harvest days! In the meantime, for all of the home gardeners we will be selling our farm grown tomato plants at the Farm Stand on Saturday morning from 9am - 12pm, until supplies last! If you are planning a Spring garden, these tried and true tomato varieties would be a great addition. Farmer Sarah is also available to answer any questions about tomato care!

Springtime is nature’s invitation to get outside and relish in the beauty and bounty this season has to offer. In the coming weeks we plan to have more new crops ready for field planting like eggplant, peppers, flowers, and more cucumbers! If you are unable to make it out to volunteer or stop by the Saturday Farm Stand, our Grab-n-Go coolers are a great alternative to remain rooted in your local farm and enjoy fresh vegetables year round!
