Description
Leeks are a member of the Allium genus along with onions, garlic, shallots, and chives. Rather than forming round bulbs like onions, leeks form long cylinders that are typically blanched in the growing process by mounding soil up around them. They are white at the root end, which turns into a pale green and eventually a darker green at the tops.
Storage tips
Store unwashed leeks in the crisper drawer of your fridge for up to 1-2 weeks.
Culinary tips
- Leeks can be eaten raw or cooked. Use them as you would green onions or shallots.
- The dark green parts of the leek are best saved for stock or discarded.
- Add shredded raw leeks to salads or slaws.
- A popular combination is potato leek soup.
