Preparing the High Tunnel and Sowing the First Tomato Seeds

After many bountiful harvests throughout the past few months, it was finally time to remove all of the sweet pepper plants in the high tunnel. Look at all that gorgeous growing space! Our plan is to plant these rows with quicker growing crops like arugula and salad mix. Once the seeds are planted, we’ll be able to start harvesting in as little as 30 days. The main reason for focusing on quicker growing crops is so that we can have these rows available for tomato planting in January!

Tomato Seeds Planted

In order to have our tomatoes ready for transplanting in the high tunnel next month, we sowed the first seeds in the greenhouse this week! We have them protected under extra layers of greenhouse film to create a warm, high humidity environment. This will encourage better germination while also keeping pests out. Here are the tomato varieties we’ll be growing: Valencia (an orange heirloom slicer), Carbon (a purple heirloom slicer), Caiman (a meaty red slicer), Sungold (a sweet orange cherry), and Sakura (a bright red cherry).

The Farm

We are pleased to announce that we’ll be doing farm tours once a month beginning in January! The next farm tour will be on Saturday, January 14th. We’ll lead several short tours during our regular Saturday farm stand hours from 9am-noon. These tours are a great opportunity to see what’s in season and what it takes to farm year-round in our climate. And, you might even get to sample some of our favorite veggies like the purple sprouting broccoli below! These tours are open to the public and free of charge. We’d love to see you there!

Harvesting the First Spinach of the Season | Sunset Farm by Jordan Ranch / December 27, 2022

[…] Remember our plan to fill the available space in the high tunnel with quicker growing crops? At least one of the rows is being planted with spinach. Our goal for this succession of spinach is to harvest it in the baby stage. That means we’ll plant the seeds much more densely using our Jang push seeder. The bed you see above will be planted with 6 rows of spinach! We should be able to harvest our baby spinach in about 40 days. […]
